Between 2001 and 2019, researchers calculated that Southeast Asia lost 610,000 square kilometres (235,500 square miles) of forest – an area larger than Thailand. 31% of this deforestation occurred in mountainous regions where highland forests has been converted to cropland and plantation in less than two decades.
